1. Who We Are
CantoneseEcho ("we", "us", "our") is an independent research and development project providing AI-powered Cantonese language tools including text-to-speech (TTS), speech-to-text (STT), and subtitle synchronization services. The platform is operated by an individual developer based in Canada and is not a registered corporation or commercial entity.
Our services are available globally at cantoneseecho.com and associated subdomains.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information you provide directly
- Account registration: Email address, username, and password (hashed β we never store plain-text passwords)
- Google OAuth sign-in: If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account email address, display name, and Google user ID
- Waitlist sign-ups: Email address and optionally company name
- Contact form submissions: Name, email address, and message content
- Text input for TTS: The text you submit for speech synthesis
- Audio uploads for STT: Audio or video files you upload for transcription
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Usage logs: Which features you use, word counts processed, provider used (Edge TTS, Azure, Groq), and processing timestamps
- Session data: An anonymous session identifier for users who are not signed in, derived from IP address and browser information using a one-way hash (we cannot reverse this to identify you)
- IP address: Collected for session management and fraud prevention
- Browser information: Browser type and version, used for session hashing only
2.3 Information we do NOT collect
- Payment card details (handled entirely by Stripe or PayPal when active)
- Precise geolocation
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Social media profile data beyond what Google OAuth provides
3. How We Use Your Information
- To provide the service: Processing your text through TTS, transcribing your audio through STT, and synchronizing subtitles
- To manage your account: Authentication, session management, and usage limit enforcement
- To improve the service: Aggregated, anonymized usage statistics help us understand which features are used most and where issues occur
- To communicate with you: Responding to contact form submissions and sending waitlist notifications you requested
- To prevent abuse: Enforcing daily usage limits and detecting fraudulent or abusive behaviour
- To comply with law: Meeting obligations under Canadian privacy legislation (PIPEDA) and other applicable laws
We do not use your personal information for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.
4. Third-Party Services
CantoneseEcho uses the following third-party services to operate. Each has its own privacy policy:
| Service | Purpose | Data Sent | Privacy Policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Azure Speech | Premium TTS and STT processing | Text or audio content you submit | microsoft.com/privacy |
| Microsoft Edge TTS | Free TTS processing | Text content you submit | microsoft.com/privacy |
| Groq | AI text processing and STT (Whisper) | Text or audio content you submit | groq.com/privacy-policy |
| Google Gemini | AI text processing (colloquialization/translation, alternate provider) | Text content you submit | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Google OAuth | Optional sign-in authentication | Email, name, Google ID (only if you choose Google sign-in) | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Buy Me a Coffee | Optional voluntary donations | Email address (if you purchase) | buymeacoffee.com/privacy-policy |
| Fly.io | Application hosting and infrastructure | All data in transit and at rest (server-side processing) | fly.io/legal/privacy-policy |
When you submit text to our TTS service or audio to our STT service, that content is transmitted to the relevant third-party processor (Microsoft or Groq) to generate the output. We do not control how these processors handle data beyond our API calls. Please review their privacy policies for details.
5. Data Storage and Retention
5.1 Database (SQLite)
We store the following in our database:
- User accounts (email, hashed password, username, tier, creation date)
- Usage logs (word count, feature used, provider, timestamp β not full text content beyond 500 characters for debugging)
- Waitlist email addresses
- Session identifiers for anonymous users
Account data is retained until you request deletion. Usage logs are retained for up to 12 months for service improvement purposes.
5.2 Audio files
Audio files generated by TTS are stored temporarily on our server and automatically deleted after 1 hour. Audio files uploaded for STT are deleted immediately after transcription is complete.
5.3 Transcript files
Transcript and SRT output files from STT or subtitle sync are stored temporarily and automatically deleted after 24 hours.
5.4 Location of data
### 5.4 Location of data CantoneseEcho is hosted on Fly.io infrastructure in the Toronto, Canada region (yyz).
